Implementing new technology in a law firm is rarely easy, especially when it involves generative AI at speed in a mid-sized firm with busy fee earners. In the latest episode of Talking Tech with Legal IT Insider, Claire Cooper, transformation lead and solicitor at Acuity Law, shared insights on the firm’s enterprise-wide implementation of Thomson Reuters’ CoCounsel and the strategies that facilitated its success.
Acuity Law has consistently been ahead of the curve with CoCounsel, leading their journey at a time when many firms exercised caution. The first of two podcasts focuses on the current state of play at Acuity and their broader innovation approach.
Challenges in Implementation
Acuity faced numerous challenges while rolling out CoCounsel. A traditional, linear rollout was deemed unrealistic due to various factors at play. Instead, the team adopted an agile, build-as-you-go approach, not because of trendiness but out of necessity.
The litigation teams were the initial users, partly because early versions of CoCounsel aligned more naturally with litigation use cases, and partly due to the teams being more accessible and open to experimentation. Following this, Acuity expanded the use to other litigation groups before transitioning into real estate, where higher-volume work benefited from AI solutions.
Multi-Prong Methods for Adoption
To drive adoption and consistency, Acuity employed multi-prong methods, allowing teams to build capability over time. CoCounsel is now available to all full-time fee earners at Acuity. The upcoming second podcast will delve into ROI and value details.
